In the event of an emergency which poses an immediate threat to the health or safety of the campus, a campus notification will be issued by the Public Information Office. Events that qualify for an emergency notification include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Extreme weather conditions
- Earthquake
- Gas leak
- Acts of terrorism
- Armed intruder
- Bomb threat
- Civil unrest
- Explosion
- Airplane crash
- Structure or wild fire
- Hazardous Materials incident
The notification will be distributed as soon as possible once the content of the message has been authorized by the President/Superintendent or his/her designee. In matters of a criminal nature, the Police Department will determine whether notifications are appropriate and necessary. One or more of the following systems will be used for sending notifications:
- Palomar Alert via e-mail
- Palomar College Emergency Notification System (InformaCast)
- Palomar College Blackboard Connect
- Palomar College home web page palomar.edu
- Bullhorns/loud speakers
- Palomar College Facebook page
- Electronic signage
- Social Media
Unless the event is limited to a defined area of the campus, Emergency Notifications will be sent to all students, faculty and staff in the Palomar campus community. A notification message will be sent unless issuance of the notification will, in the professional judgment of responsible authorities, compromise efforts to assist a victim or contain, respond to, or otherwise mitigate the emergency. The content of the message will vary depending on the situation, but will typically include the incident time, location, type, and recommended actions for safety.
Follow the directions of Emergency Notifications unless doing so will place you in greater danger. Emergency Notifications are intended to assist you in making informed decisions about your personal safety. When you become aware of a warning, take action and make sure others around you are also aware of the potential danger.
If the Palomar College Blackboard Connect System is activated, an automated voice message will be sent to the telephone number that staff has registered with Palomar College Human Resources, or Students through their Palomar E-Services account. If the SMS (text) and email notification system is activated, the message will be sent to Palomar College email accounts, or the designated account that was provided.
