Key and Card Access – Building Security

In an educational institution there is a need to balance the accessibility and use of facilities with the need to provide a safe and secure environment.  Convenience must sometimes be compromised in order to maintain security.  Each college community member must share in the responsibility to assure security for all members and property.

The Palomar College Facilities Office provides keys/cards for use by authorized faculty, staff, and students and is responsible for the implementation of these policies and procedures.   This is a college service provided to maintain building and office security and allow access to authorized personnel after hours.

The Facilities Department Locksmith is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all College locks on campus.

The individual to whom keys/cards are issued is personally responsible for the use of those keys/cards until they are returned to the Facilities Office.  Individuals must personally sign for their keys/cards and shall not transfer or loan their keys/cards to another individual.  Key/card holders shall not “prop” doors or leave them unlocked during hours when the facility is normally closed.

Key/card holders shall not unlock buildings or rooms for others unless the individual has a valid, verifiable reason and proper identification for access, or is known by the employee to have legitimate need for access to the room or building.  Key/card holders may be issued keys/cards for the duration of employment.

Students are not allowed access to any offices or restricted classrooms.

It is the responsibility of the key/card holder to report any malfunctioning locks to the Facilities Office by calling extension 2629, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  After these hours and on weekends as well as holidays, please contact Campus Police at extension 2289 or 760/891-7273.
