Our Maintenance Painters are responsible for regular and specialty requested jobs or projects involving painting, dry wall finishing and texturing.

The following are examples of services provided by the Maintenance Painters that are generally not chargeable to the requesting department:

• Remove graffiti; although there is a charge for criminal prosecution ($436 per incident)
• Touch-up painting

Services that are usually charged to the requesting department include:

• Drywall finishing, texturing and painting associated with remodels or renovations
• Apply finishes to equipment.
• Painting an area not in need of maintenance.

It is our mission to renew all interior and exterior finished surfaces in a timely and as needed manner to enhance the visual environment of Palomar College depending on the availability of funds.    Due to the variety of materials and surfaces used and the transitory nature of our faculty, staff and students it is nearly impossible to predict when any given area or surface will need renewal chronologically.

Graffiti:

Graffiti is an eyesore.  It is costly, destructive, and is against the law (California Penal Code 594.2).  Palomar College is committed to a prompt response to graffiti that occurs on campus and requests that all departments and individuals on campus promptly notify Campus Police at extension 2289 or 760/891-7273.  Once a report has been issued, Campus Police will deliver the report to the Facilities Office who will dispatch our Maintenance Painters and or Skilled Maintenance Technicians/Parking Lots to remove the graffiti.

Nature of Work/Painting:

Painters apply paint, stain, varnish, and other finishes to buildings and other structures.  They select the right paint or finish for the surface to be covered, taking into account durability, ease of handling, and method of application.  Painters first prepare the surfaces to be coated, so that the paint will adhere properly.  This may require removing the old coat of paint by sanding, wire brushing, burning, or water and abrasive blasting.  Painters may also fill nail holes and cracks, sandpaper rough spots, and wash walls and trim to remove dirt, grease, and dust.  On new surfaces, they apply a primer to sealer to prepare the surface for the top coat.  Painters may also mix paints and match colors, relying on knowledge of paint composition and color harmony.

There are several ways to apply paint and similar coverings.  Therefore, painters must be able to choose the appropriate paint applicator for each job, depending on the surface to be covered, the characteristics of the finish, and other factors.  Some jobs need only a good bristle brush with a soft, tapered edge; others require a dip or fountain pressure roller; still, others are best done using a paint sprayer.  Many jobs need several types of applicators.  In fact, painters may use an assortment of brushes, edger’s, and rollers for a single job.  The right tools speed the painter’s work and produce the most attractive finish.

Painters offer work in a sealed self-contained suit, wear protective safety glasses and a dust mask.
