Disposing of Used Oil Filters

Used oil filters are filters which contain residue of used oil. Used oil filters can be generated from an automobile, motorcycle, truck, bus, recreational vehicle, train, boat, and many other types of equipment, including your non-vehicular equipment.
There are two options available to generator for the management of used oil filters. The generator may manage used oil filters as:

  1. Hazardous waste, or
  2. Non-hazardous waste if all of the following requirements are met:
    1. The used oil filters are drained of all free flowing oil.
    2. The drained used oil filters are transferred for the purposes of metal reclamation.
    3. The drained oil filters are accumulated, stored and transported in a closed rainproof container that is capable of containing any used oil that leaks out.
    4. The container storing drained oil filters is labeled as “Drained Used Oil Filters” and shows the initial accumulation date.
    5. The storage of drained used oil filters on site is limited to one year, or 90 days after one ton has been accumulated, whichever is shorter.
    6. Persons generating, transporting, or receiving used oil filters shall use a Bill of Lading to record the transfer of used oil filters.
    7. Used oil that is drained from the used oil filters shall be managed in accordance with Article 13, Chapter 6.5, Division 20 of the Health and Safety Code.
