Journalism
Welcome to the award-winning Journalism Program!
The Journalism Program offers associate’s degrees and certificates in print and online journalism and social media. Students can pursue coursework in news writing, reporting, editing, photojournalism, public relations, social media and design.
This program doesn’t waste time lecturing students. This is a hands-on program. You will learn skills to get a job in journalism. Students learn by producing Palomar’s student newspaper The Telescope, or campus magazine, called IMPACT magazine.

The Palomar College Library and Information Technology Program provides training for students desiring employment as library technical assistants and retraining for those reentering the labor market.
Libraries and Learning Resource Centers are critical components of the information age. Special training is needed in order to organize and retrieve information. Out of this need has come the occupational area of the library/media technician. This program provides training in skills, attitudes, and knowledge leading to a Library Technical Assistant Certificate which can be applied in many occupational areas, including libraries.

The Nursing Education Department at Palomar College offers a quality program of study to individuals from varied backgrounds leading to an Associate Degree in Nursing. The program provides theoretical and clinical learning experiences in nursing, incorporates knowledge from related disciplines, and adapts to the ever-changing world. The curriculum reflects all competencies identified in the Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) standards.
The goal of the program is to prepare a competent entry level nurse to provide quality care in diverse health care settings. On completion of the program, the graduate will be prepared to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN).

Investigation of diet fads and fallacies, eating for fitness, and planning meals for optimum health throughout the life cycle. Exploration of food as an expression of cultural diversity, and examination of how traditional foods reflect geographic area and culture(regional, ethnic, cultural, religious, historical, and social influences on food patterns). Influence of socio-economic class, beliefs, gender, and age on diet, health, and disease. Application of food science principles.

The Real Estate Program in the Business Administration Department at Palomar College offers the following programs of study:
- Real Estate Appraisal License Preparation (CP): Required of individuals who are to be employed as appraisers under the control and supervision of licensed or certified real estate appraisers.
- Real Estate Broker License Preparation (AS | CA): To obtain a real estate broker license, you must first qualify for and pass a written Bureau of Real Estate examination.
- Real Estate Salesperson License Preparation (CP): Required of individuals who are to be employed as salespersons under the control and supervision of a licensed real estate broker.

Photography

The Photography Program at Palomar College offers students the opportunity to study photography from beginning to advanced levels in a variety of areas, including fine art, editorial, and commercial photography. The program stresses development of creativity while offering a firm grounding in basic skills, technical knowledge, and applications. Students can earn an Associate in Arts Degree or a Certificate of Achievement in Photography. Additionally, the courses will satisfy lower division requirements for transfer to four-year institutions or photographic specialty institutions.
Palomar’s photography instructors are experienced professionals in their field. The instructional facility includes a black and white darkroom, a fully equipped digital lab, and a studio, as well as work areas for film processing and print finishing.

Police Academy
Professionalism through training as a Police Officer!
As a dually accredited program, the Palomar College Police Academy is the best choice for future law enforcement professionals. The Basic Police Academy Program is certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and recognized by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).The Palomar College Police Academy was redesigned in 2016 as a modular training program. The modular format also meets the needs of those aspiring to be Level III, Level II, or Level I reserve police officers. Modules are completed in descending order: Module III, followed by Module II, and then Module I.The modules do not have to be completed consecutively in one year. For example, one could complete Modules III and II, leave the program, and then return the next year to complete Module I. Also, the modules do not need to be completed at the same training facility. A recruit could complete Modules III and II at another facility and then take Module I at Palomar College.

Be a leader in Public Works Management!
Specifically designed for individuals employed by or seeking employment in public works organizations in San Diego County. Provides an overview for field personnel of the basic elements of the Public Works Industry and introduces students to administrative responsibilities and planning. Prepares field personnel for “Lead Worker” positions. Introduces management and administrative concepts to field staff. Classes are designed to prepare Lead Workers for front line supervisory positions in the Public Works field. This is a cooperative program offered by Citrus, Palomar and Santiago Canyon Colleges in collaboration with and approved by the Maintenance Superintendents Association and American Public Works Association.

Sign Language-Interpreting
Train to become a nationally certified interpreter!
Palomar College’s American Sign Language/English Interpreter Training Program is a two-year course of study that prepares students to pursue employment as American Sign Language/English interpreters. Interpreting students work to develop competency in ASL and refine their English skills for the purpose of interpreting. In addition, they develop an understanding of deaf culture and history. Students learn about ethics, decision-making processes, and professionalism. The interpreter’s role is to facilitate communication between users of American Sign Language and English while maintaining sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics.
