Journalism

Welcome to the Palomar College Journalism Department.

The Telescope student staff stands outside an awards ceremony in New York City in April 2026.

The Journalism Program offers associates degrees and certificates in print and online journalism and social media. Students can pursue coursework in news writing, reporting, editing, photojournalism, public relations, content creation, social media and design. For more information on degrees, we recommend Palomar Pathways.

This program doesn’t waste time lecturing students. This is a hands-on program. You will learn skills to get a job in journalism. Students learn by producing Palomar’s student news website The Telescope, campus magazine, called IMPACT magazine, or new mini-magazine called Focus Zine. For more information, contact Journalism Professor Erin Hiro at ehiro@palomar.edu or by calling (760) 744-1150 ext. 2450.

Journalism students just returned from a conference in New York City, where they won 32 awards. We are here to help you realize your potential.
