CHALLENGE/ADVANCED PLACEMENT FOR MILITARY-TRAINED HEALTHCARE PERSONNEL POLICY 

Individuals who have held relevant military healthcare occupations, including, but not limited to: Basic Medical Technician Corpsman (Navy HM or Air Force BMTCP), Army Health Care Specialist (68W Army Medic) or Air Force Independent Duty Medical Technician (IMDT 4NOX1C) may achieve credit for military education and experience, or advanced placement into the nursing program. Applicants must provide documentation of education and experience qualifying them for the specific military healthcare occupation and successfully complete credit for prior learning, medication dosage calculation exam, and skills competency exams of the course (s) being challenged.

1. Applicants must meet all general entrance requirements of the Associate Degree Nursing Program, including completion of science prerequisite courses, general education courses for the Nursing Major, and the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam.
   
2. Acceptance of military challenge students into the nursing program is contingent upon space availability, the successful passing of the medication dosage calculation exam with grade of 90% or greater, achievement of 70% or greater on credit for prior learning exam, and the passing of the skills competency exam.
   
3. Military challenge students who have earned a grade lower than “C” or received a “W” in a previous nursing program may not be eligible for credit by exam for admission into the nursing program, and will be reviewed on a case-by case basis.

Procedure:

Application Period

Interested candidates must request an appointment with the Nursing Program Chair at least eight weeks prior to any application period to discuss eligibility requirements for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. 

Eligibility Requirements

1. Applicants who may be eligible for advanced placement will include those individuals who have proof of satisfactory completion of education, Honorable Discharge, and experience for the following, including, but not limited to:
   •  Basic Medical Technician/Corpsman (Navy HM or Air Force BMTCP) 
   • Army Health Care Specialist (68W Army Medic) 
   • Air Force Independent Duty Medical Technician (IMDT 4N0X1C)
     
2. Applicants applying for transfer credit in any area of the nursing program must submit the following materials verifying education and experience:    
   • Transcripts from appropriate education program(s) demonstrating satisfactory completion of coursework and clinical experience                
   • Documentation of experience to include DD214 and history of work assignments  

Process & Review

1. After a review of the applicant’s documentation and upon determination that the applicant has met the educational and experience requirements, as well as the additional nursing program admission requirements, the student will be required to take a written exam for medication dosage calculation, credit for prior learning, and a competency skills exam.
   
2. The following materials will be made available to the applicant once eligibility for the challenge process is confirmed:
   • Course syllabus, including course objectives
   • Content outline
   • Textbook lists
   • Example of style and format of examination
     
3. Written and skills competency examinations for challenge/ advanced placement must be completed at least eight weeks prior to admission into the program. 
   
4. Advanced Placement will be granted if the applicant meets the requirements. 
   
5. If the Challenge/ Advanced placement student is unsuccessful in completing the process, they may be eligible to apply to N117-MS under the generic student requirements.
