ESL 106 Multicultural Humanities [6 Units]

An ESL Humanities course with practice in reading and writing academic English. Critically analyze and respond to materials from culturally diverse traditions. Learn about writing as a process, essay organization, rhetorical strategies, research strategies, synthesis of sources to support a writing topic, and critical reading. This course transfers to the UC and CSU system as 3B [Humanities].

ESL 110 College Composition for Non-native Speakers [4 Units]

An ESL transferable composition course (which meets the same requirements as English C1000 or 1000E). Learn about critical reading, critical thinking, expository and argumentative writing, and library research techniques. Write expository, personal and argumentative essays as well as a research paper and other types of writing. This course transfers to the UC and CSU system as A1 [English Composition].

English Composition C/CSU Transfer-level English Composition

Image Description: The ESL Flow Chart shows four levels of academic ESL classes.  The first level is ESL 45 for 5 units or NESL 945, a noncredit course, and this class is called Reading and Writing Essentials I. The second level is ESL 105 for 6 units or NESL 975, a noncredit course, and this class is called Accelerated Written Communication I.  ESL 105 counts for UC or CSU elective units.  The third level is ESL 106 for 6 units or NESL 976, a noncredit course, and this class is called Multicultural Humanities.  ESL 106 counts for UC or CSU Humanities units. The fourth and final level has two options.  Students can choose to take a four-unit course, ESL 110, College Composition for non-native speakers, or they can choose to take English C1000 or C1000E, English Composition, which is also four units.  ESL 110 and ENG 1000/1000E both transfer to UC or CSU as transfer-level English Composition. 

NOTE: The academic ESL courses and sequence:  Students may take one or more ESL classes prior to transfer-level composition if they choose. ESL 105, 106, and 110 are all associate degree applicable as well as transferable. ESL 106 transfers to CSU/UC as Humanities units, and ESL 105 transfers as elective units. ESL 110 transfers to CSU/UC as transfer-level composition like English C1000 or 1000E
