Minimum Qualifications for Teaching in the Credit ESL Program

1.  Must meet one of the following qualifications under a) through c):

a. Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis.

OR

b.  Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND a master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language.

OR

c.  A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of the above.  Candidates making application on the basis of equivalency MUST submit the Palomar College Equivalency Qualifications Form that is attached to the application form.  If degree has not been awarded by time of application, completion of the Equivalency Qualifications Form is necessary.

2.  Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

** Note: Only coursework completed at, and degrees awarded by, accredited institutions will be considered in the satisfaction of Minimum Qualifications.  If applying with foreign degrees, translated and evaluated transcripts must be submitted.
