What is an education plan?
An education plan (or ed plan) is a personalized semester by semester course of study outlining a strategy for identifying and reaching your goals. Included are recommended career planning activities and support tools. An education plan should be developed during your first semester and maintained throughout your enrollment at Palomar College.
Note: Your education plan is subject to change whenever there is a change of major, transfer requirements, catalog rights, curriculum and policy changes, etc.
How to obtain an education plan
Schedule an appointment with a counselor to create or update your education plan. Appointments are booked 2-3 weeks in advance, so plan ahead. For quick questions, schedule a Quick Question appointment for a 15-minute session without an education plan.
How to prepare for your appointment

Create a list of questions ahead of time.
- Explore careers if you are undecided:
- Take a career assessment through Career Coach.
- Watch videos on various careers through Roadtrip Nation.
- Decide on a Certificate, an Associate degree, or a Bachelor’s degree.
- View Planning Your Pathway to learn about the different degree options.
- Have transcripts from other colleges on file with Palomar or have unofficial copies ready for your appointment.

What classes do I take?
If want to get a head start on selecting courses before meeting with a counselor, here’s some information about General Education coursework and Major coursework.
1. WHAT CLASSES DO I TAKE FOR GENERAL EDUCATION?
- Start with General Education coursework: Associate degree, CSU GE, or IGETC. Any guide can be used for an Associate degree. View Planning Your Pathway for more information.
- For math and English/English as a Second Language placement, view the Math and English First site.

2. WHAT CLASSES DO I TAKE FOR MY MAJOR?
If you want . . .
- An Associate degree, then look for coursework for your major in the Palomar Pathways Mapper tool. View this video on how to use the mapper.
- A Bachelor’s degree from the CSU, then see if Palomar has an Associate Degree for Transfer for your major; then, find that degree in the Palomar Pathways Mapper tool.
- A Bachelor’s degree from the UC or if you do not see your CSU major in the list of Associate Degrees for Transfer, then refer to www.ASSIST.org for coursework for your major.
- A Bachelor’s degree from out of state or from a private university, see if Palomar has an agreement with the university.
