The City of Encinitas is hiring an Arts Assistant.  The job is described as:

“The Arts Assistant is responsible for providing a variety of support services in the day-to-day operations, programs and events of the Cultural Arts Division. Arts Assistant duties includes but are not limited to coordinating with artists and vendors, curating and installing exhibits, overseeing the Civic Art Galleries, preparing marketing materials including graphic design, assisting with the Public Art Program, assisting with concerts, receptions and cultural arts events, answering phones, billing, and all aspects of inventory and supply management.”

The Art Department Scholarship Competition is now open!

This year due to Covid19 the Art Department has taken its scholarship competition online.  We are excited to have scholarships available for students currently enrolled in at least one Art class this semester. There is a requirement that artwork you submit must have been created in the last two years. The scholarship competition is being hosted as a Canvas class so if you would like to participate head on over to this link https://palomar.instructure.com/enroll/K9XA9T and self-enroll in the class.  There is no grade and it will not effect your GPA.

The deadline to submit a completed application, and images of your works of art, is Wed., April 21, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.Scholarship recipients will be listed as an announcement on the scholarship Canvas site by Mon., April 26, 2021. The Palomar College Foundation will also notify winners in writing.

Celebrate San Diego: Black History and Heritage Online Exhibit and Timeline

The San Diego History Center is launching a  new exhibit, Celebrate San Diego: Black History & Heritage. This initiative partners with, listens to, shares milestones, and captures physical and digital elements reflecting this vibrant community’s unique history. The exhibit invites contributions from the community.  Here is what the exhibit organizers say about the project:

Celebrate San Diego: Black History & Heritage is a new project of the San Diego History Center. More than an exhibition with a limited life span, this initiative is multi-layered and has life in the physical, the digital, as well as the SDHC permanent collection to be shared and studied for generations to come. Celebrate is an unfolding exhibition that’s not complete without on-going community crowd-sourced insights, information and items.

Campus Creatives Exhibit

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido Museum is providing digital content each Monday for their exhibition “Campus Creatives.” The exhibit highlights the artworks of 56 artists  teaching in San Diego County’s colleges. Follow the museum on social media for a short interview, studio tour, or video from a different artist in the exhibition.

Getty Center Free Online Artist Talk

Photography as Revolutionary Aesthetic: An LA Artist Conversation

Artists Todd Gray, Cauleen Smith, and Ken Gonzales-Day, each with distinct approaches to photo-based practices, discuss how they integrate concepts of identity and explore the tensions between refusal and inclusion. These artists are all native to California and their experiences as professors and artists reinforce the importance of place and community. Addressing themes from the forthcoming exhibition Photo Flux: Unshuttering LA, they’ll discuss their commitment to creating and expanding opportunities for emerging artists to stand, flex, and grow.

The event is free and online Feb.25 at 5pm.  You must register for the talk.

February is Museum Month in San Diego!

February is museum month in San Diego! Although many museums may be closed for Covid19 the San Diego Museum Council and local museums are still bringing some exciting programs to you virtually!

A few highlights include:

  • The San Diego Museum of Art will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the research and planning of the large, groundbreaking exhibition to be shared in 2024. Join SDMA for Planning Wonders to learn about the exhibition on science and Islamic art on February 19 at 10 a.m.
  • The Lux Art Institute will produce a virtual artist talk for its current Artist-in-Residence Beatriz Cortez. The presentation will have two dates; one for Spanish-speaking audiences on February 18 at 6 p.m. and another for English speakers on February 25 at 6 p.m.

This website has regular step by step exercises to help you create finished products using photoshop.  There are exercises for gaining skills in photo manipulation or text manipulation and lessons are laid on in a step by step method.  If there is a Photoshop effect you are looking to accomplish and are not sure how this site is a great place to look for guidance.

Having an Emerging Artist Mindset

Proko Drawing Tutorials

The Proko website offers many drawing tutorials. Anatomy, Figure Drawing, Portrait, and Caricature lessons are all available.  The website is a great resource and also covers topics like lighting, shadows, perspective, and techniques. The videos are straight forward and easy to follow and there is plenty of free content or you can pay for the premium version.
