Ellen Gowen, a registered dietitian, earned her  B.S. and M.S. in Nutritional Science from San Diego State University. She is certified in Lactation Education Counseling from UCSD and in Adult Weight Management by the Commission on Dietetic Administration. Her earlier career experience was in medical laboratory technology and in nutrition research, as well as in nutrition and HIV. She has extensive experience in community nutrition, and has worked with local North San Diego County communities in maternal, infant and child nutrition for 18 years.
