UCSD Transfer Requirements for Psychology Majors

Considering UCSD as a psychology major?  Here is the Psychology Department webpage for more information about their program.  Below you’ll find the basic requirements you’ll need to satisfy for transfer as a psychology major.

UCSD offers 2 bachelor degrees in psychology:  The Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS).  The distinction is subtle in the grand scheme of things, but basically they suggest the BS route for people who are interested in science-oriented careers and/or who intend to go on to graduate school.  Regardless, to maximize your chance of acceptance, take as many major-prep courses as possible, including:

  1. 3 Natural Science courses chosen from
    • Biological Sciences
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
  2. 3 Formal Skills courses
    • For the BA: Calculus (at least 1 course) or logic
    • For the BS: Calculus for science and engineering
  3. Computer programming (1 course)
  4. Statistics (1 course; must be taken for a letter grade).

For maximum efficiency, try to take courses that satisfy your major requirements and general education requirements at the same time!  For example, almost all UC campuses require statistics for psychology majors.  Make sure the statistics course you take at Palomar also satisfies the mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning requirement for transfer (as of the 2014-15 academic year, Psy 205 satisfies both!).  Also, and yes, it is getting repetitive, but make use of Assist.org to find out the specific Palomar courses that will satisfy the above requirements as well as the psychology courses offered at Palomar that will transfer.

Intercollege General Education Transfer Courses

While completion of all general education (GE) requirements is advised, it is not required.  UCSD is divided into six different colleges and completing the 37 semester hour courses for IGETC will satisfy the GE requirements at four of them (John Muir, Thurgood Marshall, Sixth, and Earl Warren).  IGETC courses are accepted at the other two (Eleanor Roosevelt and Revelle), but additional coursework may be required.  Note, that the psychology major is available at all six colleges, so you are not limited there.
