2024 English Department Scholarships:

The Palomar English Faculty Emeriti Scholarship

$1000 First Prize 

The Palomar English Faculty Emeriti Scholarship was made possible by the generosity of a retired English Professor, and it is awarded annually to first-generation college students whose work focuses on the literature (in any of a variety of forms) of underrepresented groups. Details are as follows:

Who is eligible: First-generation college students at Palomar.

Qualifications:
an English major or someone with a strong interest in the major who plans to transfer to a four-year college/university; a GPA of 3.0 or better; completion of English 100.

Applications Must Include:

  1. A short letter of intent, explaining who you are and your qualifications. Make sure you include an email and your student ID so we can contact you (about 500 words).
  2. An essay of at least five hundred words in any of the following literary traditions: African American, Asian American, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander or LGBTQIA. The essay may cover any literary genre, including the novel, poetry, drama and nonfiction, as well as less traditional literary forms as graphic novels, music, film, performance, and screen.
  3. One faculty reference from the Palomar College English Department (contact information only; no recommendation letter is required).

The Betty Webb and Richard Norlin Memorial Prize

$250 First Prize 

The English Department awards an annual cash scholarship to outstanding English majors in our program. The scholarship is named after two valued former colleagues–Betty Webb and Dick Norlin–who devoted their careers to instilling in students a love of reading and writing. Details are as follows:

Who is eligible: a current student at Palomar who has not previously been awarded the scholarship.

Qualifications: an English major or someone with a strong interest in the major who plans to transfer to a four-year college/university; a GPA of 3.0 or better; completion of English 100.

Applications Must Include:
