Members Appreciation Dinner – May 12, 2011

The Friends of the Palomar College Arboretum Annual Members Dinner was held on May 12, 2011 at the Patron’s Friendship Pavilion. Several members were honored for their outstanding contributions to the Arboretum during the past 40 years. Appreciation awards and lifetime memberships were presented to James Robert Kelly, co-founder of the Arboretum; Wayne Armstrong, Life Sciences; Richard Borevitz Irrigation Specialist, Dick Henderson, Cactus & Succulent Horticulturist, and Bill Adams, M.D. The highlight of the evening was James Robert “Bob” Kelly, whose dream of a campus arboretum 40 years ago finally became a reality.

Discovery San Marcos Trails Tour
Saturday, February 5, 2011 – 9:30 am

The Friends of San Marcos Parks and Trails group organized an easy, 3-mile hike that was lead through the Palomar College Arboretum. The hike to the Arboretum was led by Director Susan LaJoie.

Wayne Armstrong and Tony Rangel gave the hikers a short tour of the Arboretum and the Cactus and Succulent Garden.
There were about 25 to 30 hikers.

Ralph Evans, owner of Bamboo Headquarters, will demonstrate the selection, planting, and care of Bamboo for local landscapes. Evans has the largest commercial Bamboo Nursery in the U.S. It is located in Vista and San Marcos. http://www.bamboohq.com  

Subjects include: selection of the right bamboo for your landscape or privacy screen, planting and care information. The PowerPoint presentation was followed by a tour and demonstration in the Palomar Arboretum Bamboo Collection.

Plant Classification Lecture

An introduction to how plants are classified, with particular emphasis on flowering plants (angiosperms).  This two hour lecture will discuss vegetative and reproductive terminology, with a brief introduction to phylogenetic classification using chloroplast DNA.  Several plant families will be used to illustrate some of the taxonomic revisions in the new revised Jepson Manual of California Plants, including Wayne’s favorite group the duckweeds, formerly in the family Lemnaceae, but now placed in the arum family (Araceae).

Basic Tree Trimming Workshop

This free workshop was intended to educate home owners on the proper trimming techniques for small garden and lawn trees. There was a quick tour of some of the large and unique specimens in the Arboretum. The attendees took a look at the diverse growth habits and growth rates of various trees species, including palms. Proper trimming techniques with respect to growth rates and growth habits, as well as when and why to trim trees was covered. Attendees had a chance to see exactly how to trim and care for different types of trees. A big thank you to Tony and Todd for volunteering their time and expertise.

2010 Cactus and Succulent Care Workshop

Met in front of the Cactus Garden Gate (Comet Circle Entrance)
The workshop was free to the public.

The cactus and succulent garden, located at Comet Circle Drive and Mission Road, offers about 3,000 varieties of plants from around the world. The workshop included a tour of the garden, a discussion of the use and history of the plants and the basics of succulent plant care.
