Summary
We were saddened to hear of the passing of James Hubbell this year. Escondido Creek Conservancy wrote a wonderful article about his legacy here: https://escondidocreek.org/news/a-tribute-to-james-hubbell/.
The Palomar College Arboretum is lucky to have a beautiful art structure created by James Hubbell and had a relationship with him. Elaine Armstrong captured it best in her comments.
"I had the pleasure, privilege, and honor to have known James Hubbell and his family.
Mr. Hubbell was everything that was written about him in the article by Pam Kragen in the S.D. Union Tribune (https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/05/20/james-hubbell-san-diegos-iconic-sculptor-artist-naturalist-and-peace-advocate-dies-at-92/).
One of my Palomar College art instructors was a good friend of James Hubbell. His name was Jim Hulbert. Mr. Hulbert was one of my favorite art instructors. Jim was a graduate of Art Center in Pasadena. After Jim Hulbert passed away, Wayne and I would meet for lunch with Jim’s wife Gwen. Gwen was a nurse and the nicest and most delightful person you would ever meet.
Jim Hulbert and James Hubbell met while serving in the army. And they were friends for life.
Jim would schedule student field trips to the Hubbell home. And James Hubbell made time to be a guest speaker for the art students at Palomar College.
Edna Pulver made a large donation to the Palomar College Arboretum. She saw the value in having an Arboretum. I took several art classes with Edna. Edna was good friends with Jim Hulbert and James Hubbell."
