Program Description

Students may demonstrate that they have met the objectives of a course through experience in the work place, foreign language proficiency, or some other process outside the conventional academic setting, by receiving a passing grade on an examination administered by the Department of World Languages. For the complete policy and academic regulations regarding Credit by Examination, please consult the Palomar College Catalog.

Credit by Examination is currently available for these courses:

Arabic 101, 102
Chinese 101, 102
French 101, 102
German 101, 102
Italian 101, 102
Japanese 101, 102

World Languages Credit by Exam Policies

  • Students are eligible to participate in Credit by Exam only one time per course (e.g., Span 101, Span 102, Germ 101). Students who have taken Credit by Exam in a previous semester are not able to retake the exam for that course.
  • Students must be sixteen (16) or older to petition for Credit by Exam in the World Languages Department.
  • Students younger than sixteen (16) may contact the faculty coordinator to request special permission to petition for Credit by Exam. The department strongly encourages students to wait until the age of sixteen (16) to petition, but younger students will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
