What is FERPA-protected data?

FERPA-protected data is any record that can be linked to a specific student, whether by name, by social security number, by student ID, or through any other kind of personally identifiable information (e.g., transcripts, financial records, assignments, etc.) is covered.

These records include but are not limited to grades, transcripts, class lists, student course schedules, health records (at the K-12 level), student financial information (at the postsecondary level), and student discipline files.

FERPA defines the term personally identifiable information (PII) to include direct identifiers (such as a student’s or other family member’s name) and indirect identifiers (such as a student’s date of birth, place of birth, or mother’s maiden name). For additional training and understanding of FERPA visit the 3PD Portal to enroll in the 15-minute FERPA: Confidentiality of Records course.

*For these reasons, each data request will be evaluated for FERPA compliance prior to data being provided.
