Palomar Speech and Debate Team Does It Again!!

Please join me in congratulating the Palomar Speech and Debate Team students and faculty on their fruitful efforts again this year!  The team won Gold in the Debate Category of their Division for the second year in a row at the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament in Washington D.C.   James Nee took Bronze in both Extemporaneous and Impromptu Speaking as well as a Silver in NFA Lincoln Douglas.  Matt Duburg and Jacob Tucker placed Bronze in Parliamentary Debate.  Jacob Tucker won Gold in NFA Lincoln Douglas.  In addition, Palomar College won 4th place sweepstakes in the Community College Division of the National Parliamentary Debate Tournament.

In addition to winning over 50 trophies throughout the 2016-2017 competition season, the team had the pleasure of hosting debaters from the Peoples Republic of China for the second year in a row for a public debate.   This was the fifth time Palomar has hosted debaters from China.  Team members’ majors include Journalism, Political Science, Communications, Finance, and Gender Studies. The Speech Team will transfer students in Fall 2017 to San Diego State University, California State University, Long Beach, and San Marcos, and the University of California at Berkeley.

Building Emergency Notes

I am writing to encourage you all (PT faculty, FT faculty, and all staff) to keep a personal emergency kit in your car and/or work area in the unlikely event of a campus emergency.  Your kit should contain a flashlight, back-up eyeglasses and medications, sturdy shoes, a sweater or sweatshirt, a wrapped snack and water packet, and personal emergency contact numbers.

If you are interested in being a member of the Humanities Building Emergency Team, we are looking for people who teach or work in the building after 5 p.m. and on Saturdays.  Please contact me with further questions — x2251 or by email ssivert@palomar.edu.

Thank you.

Classroom Furniture

Hi everyone!  Good first days back?  Be sure to let your department and/or the division office know if there are any issues to be addressed!

One that I am aware of is the movement of classroom furniture from one room to another.  Please don’t move any furniture (tables, chairs, desks).  Everything is set up to accommodate the classes scheduled in those rooms.  One class was short 2 desks today, and students had to stand.

I appreciate your assistance with this.  If your class is short seats, please let us know at x2251 asap so that we can find a better solution.

Thank you.

Spring 2017 Welcome!

Hi everyone!  I hope that you had a restful time away and are back energized and ready to rock and roll!  On Tuesday, Sherry Titus, Kelly Falcone, and I presented “Nuts & Bolts” to a group of faculty.  For those of you unable to attend, below are links to the presentation and to a syllabus template. Perhaps you’ll find them of use!

Looking forward to seeing you in the halls and offices and classrooms, doing what we do best — work with our students! Feel free to drop by to chat if you have any questions or just want to say hi!

Textbook Assistance Program Update (12/5/16)

A note from Kim Hartwell, the Development Officer with our Palomar College Foundation:

It is my pleasure to update you on the success of the Textbook Assistance Program here at Palomar College.

For those who may not know, the Textbook Assistance Program started in 2009 at Palomar College to address the ongoing and critical problem of students not being able to afford their required textbook for their class.

Oftentimes students would try to get by without a textbook; and more often than not, end up failing the class. What started as a small $100 assistance program has grown into a widely popular, necessary, well-known and well-run student support program.

Since 2009, the Foundation (and several of our donors), have contributed over $750,000 to this program. This equates to the purchase of over 9,000 books given as direct textbook assistance to 6,500 Palomar students.

Additionally, a portion of the $750,000 has gone towards funding the Library reserves at both the San Marcos and Escondido campuses. Library statistics show that the books purchased for the reserves since 2009 have been checked out by students close to 100,000 times!

(Below is a recent email from Tamara Weintraub, Library Chair, on the circulations just for this past year).

“On behalf of the Library, I wish to thank the Foundation for their ongoing support of our students with funding that allows the Library to purchase textbooks that we may lend to them. During the 2015/16 Academic Year,

we were able to purchase a total of 158 new textbooks for students to use at both the San Marcos Campus and Escondido Center Libraries, which brought our entire Foundation reserves collection of textbooks to 774 (including those purchased previously and still in use).

During the 2015/16 Academic Year, these books were checked out a total of 12,603 times! This number reflects a remarkable and ongoing need for these books by our students, and demonstrates the tremendous benefit of the Textbook Assistance Program. I’ve attached a list of the books that were checked out 100+ times during the year.  We truly appreciate the Foundation’s tremendous support in making this possible.”

I just thought I’d share the impressive results of this very important program. Should you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

And of course, if you ever encounter a student who is in need of financial assistance with a textbook, please send him/her our way!
