This year’s Constitution Day event will explore constitutional protections, especially the Fourth and Fifth Amendments rights to due process, in the context of modern immigration enforcement in Southern California. Attorney panelists, including Mohammad Tajsar, Senior Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Southern California and Rebecca Brown, Immigration Attorney from Public Counsel, will discuss Vasquez Perdomo v. Noem, a class-action lawsuit challenging unconstitutional stops, arrests, and denial of access to counsel. Students will also learn about career pathways in public service and the legal field. This year’s Law Day theme, “The Constitution’s Promise: Out of Many, One” highlights the strength of our nation’s diversity and the vital contributions of immigrants.
Join us for Law Day as we welcome our keynote speaker Sergio Covarrubias Garcia, a trailblazing attorney whose journey exemplifies resilience and determination. Brought to the U.S. as a child, Sergio navigated immense legal and personal challenges to achieve his dream of becoming a lawyer. After years of advocacy, he made history as the first undocumented person in the U.S. to be authorized to practice law.
We are also excited to welcome Aidin Castillo Mazantini (she/her), Executive Director of the University of California Immigrant Legal Services Center. Aidin, an immigration lawyer, will discuss a wide range of immigrant students’ rights, including those of undocumented individuals, permanent residents traveling, international students regarding freedom of speech, and valuable legal resources.
Don’t miss this inspiring discussion!
We encourage you to host watch parties to help your community engage with this important event! Let us know if your campus is planning one—we’d love to highlight it!
