What is Early College Credit?

Articulation/Credit by Exam

  • Definition: Articulation agreements allow students to earn college credit for high school courses that have been pre-approved by Palomar College. If the high school course aligns with a college course in terms of curriculum and standards, students may earn college credit after successfully passing an exam, known as “Credit by Exam”.
  • How it Works: Typically, a formal agreement exists between the high school and the college. After completing the articulated course and possibly taking an exam, students can receive college credit.
  • How to Enroll: Students must apply to Palomar College and use their Palomar ID to create a CATEMA account to opt-in for college credit
  • Benefits: Saves time and money, as students don’t have to retake similar courses in college. It also helps them progress more quickly through their college degree requirements.

Dual Enrollment

  • Definition: Dual Enrollment programs allow high school students to enroll in college courses and earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. These courses are usually taught by college faculty or qualified high school teachers.
  • How it Works: Students take actual college courses, either on a college campus, online, or at their high school. The credits earned count towards both their high school diploma and college degree.
  • How to Enroll: Students enroll through their school who assist with enrolling at Palomar College.
  • Benefits: Students get a head start on college, often with a reduced or no cost for the college credits. It also provides exposure to college-level coursework while still in high school.

Concurrent Enrollment

  • Definition: Concurrent Enrollment allows high school students to take college courses, but unlike Dual Enrollment, the credits earned usually count only towards college and not high school requirements.
  • How it Works: Students enroll in college courses while still in high school, typically taking these courses outside of their regular high school schedule, such as in the evenings or during the summer.
  • How to Enroll: Students must submit a K-12 Special Admissions application to Enrollment Services.
  • Benefits: Provides an opportunity to experience college coursework and earn college credit early, though it might not fulfill high school graduation requirements.
