College is more fun when you make connections with other students. The ASL/Interpreting Lab at Palomar College is a good place to meet new friends, set up study groups, play ASL games, and find out about Deaf and ASL events in Southern California.

The ASL/Interpreting Lab is located in room H-223 on the second floor of the Humanities building near Student Parking Lot #12.

Mondays, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Tuesdays, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

                                                                                               Wednesdays, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

                                                                                         Thursdays, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 

 

Interested in Taking an ASL Lab Class? 

There are 8 ASL Lab classes available to any student who would like to take them (ASL 100L, 101L, 205L, 206L). These .5 – 1-Unit, Pass/No Pass lab classes are intended for students who wish to further improve their ASL skills. Review the schedule for the labs that will be offered for the current semester. Students will utilize the videotapes, software, and workbooks provided in the American Sign Language/English Interpreting Lab to improve comprehension of ASL sentences and stories. Through the use of video recording equipment, students will have the opportunity to improve their expressive signing skills. Lab activities are designed to provide students the opportunity to practice vocabulary and syntax taught in ASL. In order to pass, 34-48 hours (1.5-3 hours/week) of lab time must be accumulated.

There are also 4 ASL Interpreting Lab classes available to enrolled Interpreting students only (ASL 210L, 211L, 215L, 216L). These Lab classes can be taken for .5 or 1 Unit of credit.

Some universities require students to complete 3 semesters studying a language other than English. Of those colleges and universities, some expect that your language classes are 5 units each. Palomar’s ASL classes are currently 4 units each. Both the UC system and the CSU system do recognize our 4-unit ASL courses for transfer. They do not require a 5th unit. Check the institution that you plan to transfer to in order to verify the number of units and the specific courses that will be honored by the school you plan to attend. If you find that the school you wish to attend does not require the lab component and you do not wish to remain enrolled in an ASL Lab class, please be sure to drop before the drop deadline. If you plan to transfer to a four year institution that requires a 5th unit, our 1-unit independent study lab classes will allow you to earn 5 units for each ASL class that you successfully complete.

Students who take the lab class have access to staff, friendly Deaf students, and other ASL and interpreting students who are interested in practicing sign language. Regular practice will reinforce what you are learning in your ASL classes.
