Technology Tips and Resources

For formerly incarcerated students who may have not had internet access for years at a time, it can be difficult to navigate the technology necessary to succeed. If you are intending to register as a Palomar College Rising Scholars (Transitions) Program student and need a computer, please contact us at rise@palomar.edu or call at (760) 744-1150, ext. 2648.  The videos and resources on this page are meant to help formerly incarcerated and system-impacted people especially.

First, a tip for reading and using webpages like this one: “Links” are words in webpages that are programmed to take you to another webpage when you click on the words. Usually links are a different color than the rest of the words in a webpage – and a little hand will appear when you “hover” over these words. On this page, for example,  links are red words, but on lots of other webpages like Yahoo, links are blue and underlined. For more help with getting around on a computer, check out a helpful tutorial by clicking on these red words; doing so will take you to another website that has an easy-to-follow tutorial. What you see on your computer might not look exactly like the what they’re showing on this tutorial, but it might be a good place to start.

The below videos are designed to help you navigate Palomar technology; note that these videos do not have sound:

  • How to find your student email. Once you are a registered Palomar College student, you will be assigned a new student email account that you should check at least once a day. This is where all your Palomar information will come, including announcements from classes and from campus offices like Admissions and Financial Aid. Here is a video on how to check your student email: https://youtu.be/b47qLpUjOxk
  • All online classes, and some in-person classes utilize a program called Canvas. Rising Scholars (Transitions) students will also be added to a Rising Scholars (Transitions) Canvas site, where you will also receive announcements and access to resources. Here’s information on how to log in to Canvas: https://youtu.be/v-SPfk6NaQU
  • How to change your MyPalomar Password: https://youtu.be/umYiEAdrofY If you try the instructions outlined in the video and are still having a problem logging into your MyPalomar account, please contact Admissions at: admissions@palomar.edu or call 760 744 1150 and press 0 to speak to operator.
  • How to find your Ed Plan, which lays out the classes you need to take to earn your degree (and to transfer to a four-year university and finish your bachelor’s degree): https://youtu.be/Hz3LcB8-Xt0. If you don’t have an EdPlan yet, click here to get more information or  call Counseling at (760) 891-7511.

While the above videos should help with frequently needed issues, there’s a more comprehensive Technology Help for Students page available as well.
