Welcome Days 2025 Workshops

Join us for Welcome Days at Palomar College and get ready to start your college experience this fall! Palomar Promise and EOPS are excited to invite you to the Palomar community with our Welcome Day events. Welcome Days is a great first step to support your successful transition as a new Palomar College student or successful return as a continuing Palomar College student.
Welcome Days at Palomar College is a several-day hybrid event which will be held starting July 29 through August 7. Workshops will be offered both via Zoom and in-person. We are featuring workshops covering a range of topics including a collection of pre-recorded videos that you can view anytime!
Why Participate?
• Meet staff, counselors and administrators from across campus to learn about the various resources and support programs available to you as a Palomar College student.
• Attending Welcome Days is essential for all new Palomar Promise and EOPS students to learn how they can thrive and be successful at Palomar College.
Registration Details:
• Review the Welcome Day agenda below and find the sessions you plan to attend.
• Determine if you would like to attend the workshop in-person or join us via Zoom. Click on the appropriate “Register” button below the workshop description.
• Fill out the pre-registration form and submit. Within a couple of minutes, you will receive a confirmation email with the event details. If registering to attend virtually, a Zoom meeting link will be sent to you via email.
• To help you organize your schedule, we encourage you to add all the workshop events to your calendar and include any Zoom links that you will need to access on the day of the event.
• Please note each virtual workshop has its own Zoom URL, and you must register in advance to join.
Parking
Lot 12 (including the Parking Structure) has been reserved for students to park on the day of the workshop. Citing in this specific lot will be suspended for this event. Click here to view the map of Palomar College San Marcos campus.

Promise Skillshop Requirement Information
Palomar Promise students are required to participate in Skillshops during their fall and spring semesters. Get a jump start with completing your fall Skillshop requirement by attending at least 2 Welcome Day workshops.
*Attending at least 2 Welcome Day workshops will satisfy your fall Skillshop participation requirement for the Palomar Promise program.
PALOMAR PROMISE
Palomar Promise Kickoff: What to Expect & How to Succeed
Join us to meet the Promise team as we welcome you to Palomar College as a first year student. Our team will share our vision and the resources and support available through Palomar Promise. In this session, we will discuss what you need to do to maintain your Promise eligibility for Year 1 and Year 2, review requirements, and have a Q/A session at the end of the presentation. We will also provide helpful tips on what to expect during your first week.

Pathways & Perspectives: Advice & Insights from Promise Peer Mentors
Get the inside scoop on college life from students who have been right where you are! In this interactive panel discussion, Palomar Promise mentors will share their personal experiences navigating their first-year at Palomar College as Promise students. Hear real stories about adjusting to college life, making the most of campus resources, balancing classes and personal life, and staying motivated. Whether you are feeling excited, nervous, or a little of both- this is your chance to ask questions, get advice, and connect with peers who understand the journey.

Start Strong: Winning Your First Semester
Navigating college can feel overwhelming- but it doesn't have to be. Whether you’re transitioning to college straight from high school or returning to school after a break, this workshop will set you up for success from day one. Join us to discover practical tips, essential tools, and valuable insights to help you confidently navigate your courses and the college system. From understanding syllabi to managing your time effectively and accessing resources, we've got you've covered. After this session, you'll walk away feeling informed, empowered, and ready to crush your first semester at Palomar College.

Join us for an informative overview of the Math and Science Learning Center (MSLC). Skillshop (Student Success Workshops)

What are Skillshops?
Skillshops are free workshops offered by various departments on campus. These workshops are designed and presented with the purpose of helping students succeed, whether it be in the classroom, at-home life, or in the real world, and cover a wide range of topics such as academic enhancement, career development, college transfer, and financial aid/planning. With Skillshops, students can get help with everything from receiving hands-on assistance with their financial aid application and improving study habits to managing stress and test anxiety and even career exploration and planning.

Money Matters-Navigating Financial Aid
This workshop is designed to provide students with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the financial aid process successfully at Palomar College. The workshop covers topics such as understanding types of aid, viewing the "To Do List", understanding the award letter, maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Participants will gain valuable insights and practical guidance to make informed decisions about their educational funding.

Student Success Starts Here: An Overview of Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS)
EOPS (Extended Opportunity Programs & Services) is a state-funded program designed to assist California residents or AB-540 students who are economically, socially, and educationally disadvantaged. Our mission is to provide innovative and traditional student support services to help and empower students through their educational journey. During this workshop you will learn more about our program history, program requirements, and the program services we provide. For example, book vouchers, gas cards, parking permits, bus pass, academic and personal counseling, priority registration and much more. Come join and learn more about our EOPS program.

Black Student Success Program & Umoja
The Palomar Black Student Success Program offers essential support to promote the academic and cultural growth of Black students. It provides mentorship, advocacy, and a strong sense of community to help students succeed both academically and personally. The Umoja Community is a key part of this initiative, designed to enhance the educational and cultural experiences of African American and other students. Through a holistic approach, Umoja encourages academic excellence and fosters a sense of belonging. The Umoja Learning Community includes linked courses like ENGL C1000E: English Composition and COUN 110: College Success, with additional opportunities such as statewide conferences, college tours (including an HBCU tour), dedicated counseling, and priority registration. This fall, the new Umoja Village space will open, providing a dedicated hub for connection and support. Umoja is open to any student seeking a community-focused, culturally enriching experience.

Puente Information Session
Learn more about the Puente Program whose mission is to increase the number of students transferring to four year colleges and universities. This Learning Community is made up of a College Success COUN 110 and ENGL C1000E course. We have trips planned to UCLA, Chicano Park, SDSU and more. To join you need to be available Tues/Thurs for in person courses and activities.
