Wow, did October fly by!
It was a busy month for us here at the GEAR UP program. We started the month with a trip to SMHS for the annual SMUSD College Expo. Students had the opportunity to connect with over 90 colleges and universities! Students walked away with tons of college-related information and goodies. In collaboration with the wonderful MHHS staff, we were able to test all GEAR UP students (10th and 11th graders) for the PSAT on Octover 14th. This was something that took a lot of team effort, but things went well! Our PSAT prep workshops were overflowing with students, a sign showing how our students took this test seriously. Keep an eye out for our post-PSAT workshop to occur sometime in January, once we return from break.

Academic Leaders for Everyone!
Another thing we are excited about is to finally have our Academic Leaders (ALs) placed in classes. We were able to do so starting at the beginning of October and so far, things are going great! Most of the ALs are in math and science classes: Algebra I and II, Pre-Calc/Trig, Chemistry, and Physics. Our ALs are excited to be in the classroom helping our students! With ALs being placed, we also held a workshop for teachers on how to best utilize them in the classroom. We discussed ways in which ALs can help the students through group collaboration, one on one guidance, test prep, and project or lab assistance. Thank you to the teachers who came out and participated!
