Understanding your Placement
Welcome to Palomar College!
We want you to succeed in our courses and programs, so we recommend getting started at the level where you will be most likely to have a good learning experience. This is an important first step on your path to success.
We offer our recommendations for placement with your success as the ultimate goal, directing you toward lower level courses only if we determine that you are highly unlikely to succeed in transfer-level English (English 100).
Are you wondering how we determine what course to recommend for you?
Newly enacted state legislation (Assembly Bill 705) requires that all California Community Colleges use multiple measures to determine placement recommendations for students in English courses. The recommended placement is based on your answers to questions in your application.
If your recommended placement is English 100, you will probably succeed in college-level (transferrable) English. Be prepared to work hard and participate fully in this learning opportunity.
If your recommended placement is English 50, you will need to strengthen your skills before moving on to transfer-level English. English 50 is a four-unit class that will result (with your effort) in your readiness to enter English 100 the following semester.
If your recommended placement is English 50A, you will need additional instruction and support to prepare for transfer-level English, and we are ready to help! English 50A is a six-unit course which will prepare you (with your effort) to enter English 100 the following semester. Be prepared to work hard and participate fully in this great learning opportunity.
Ultimately, any student wishing to earn an A.A. degree must complete ENG 100 with a grade of ‘C’ or better.
