Instructions:

The Organizing Committee’s priority is to ensure that the breakout sessions offered are excellent models of learner-centered designs that empower students. The Organizing Committee seeks breakout session proposals where one or more facilitators demonstrate an active learning strategy. The Committee will give the highest consideration to breakout session proposals that include an innovative design showcasing a learner-centered active classroom. Note that breakout session facilitators are expected to NEVER read papers or present an entire lecture; rather, the breakout sessions will be the facilitation of an active learning strategy used in class. Activities might be creative adaptations of active learning strategies designed or modified by the presenter(s) to engage students in their learning and the participants will get to experience the activity as if they were students. Sessions may be either 60 or 90 minutes in length (your choice).

You will be asked to complete three questions pertaining to your presentation:

1. Breakout session introduction:  How will you engage your attendees when they enter your workshop?

2. Breakout session active learning segment:  Explain the active learning strategy you will be employing in your workshop.  This should be the majority of the workshop where your attendees are actively participating.  This cannot be a lecture.  Treat your attendees as your students in an active classroom.  What will your attendees be doing during your workshop?

3. Breakout session conclusion: How will you conclude your workshop to focus on how your attendees will apply this in their classrooms.

Important dates:

  • January 16, 2015: Final day for submitting Breakout Session Proposals
  • January 23, 2015: Notification of Proposal acceptance
  • January 30, 2015: Presenters must complete their registration for the Conference

Here is an example of a well-designed active learning session:

1. Breakout session introduction:  How will you engage your attendees when they enter your workshop?

“I plan to do an opening session where the participants come up a quicklist of the qualities/characteristics of successful students. Then they do hand-up, stand-up activity to share their ideas. Then we do a shout-out and I put several of the qualities on the board. As we watch Skip discuss the 8 qualities of successful students, I circle the qualities/characteristics that the group has come up with.”

  1. Please note the different duration times for various activities that could be either shortened or lengthened to adapt to a 60 or 90-minute session.
