The Choice is Yours
At Palomar College, you can take classes in different ways—online, in person, or a mix of both. Learn what each option means so you can choose what works best for you. Each type of class works differently. See the descriptions in the following section to find what fits your schedule and learning style.

How to Choose
- Fully Online: Asynchronous affords the most flexibility.
- Fully Online: Synchronous provides a set schedule and live interaction.
- Fully Online: Blend is a mix of synchronous and asynchronous.
- With Partially Online, you will come to campus sometimes.
- HyFlex gives you the option to switch between online and in-person.
Fully Online: Asynchronous
No set meeting time—learn on your own schedule.
In the class schedule: Look for “Fully Online Class” with no set times.
These classes are fully online and do not require you to log in at a specific time. You’ll complete assignments each week by set deadlines.
Fully Online: Synchronous
Attend class online at scheduled times.
In the class schedule: Look for a “Fully Online Class” with listed dates at “Live Web”.
These classes meet online at specific days and times. You’ll join live sessions with your instructor and classmates.
Fully Online: Blend
Attend scheduled class sessions but otherwise work on your own schedule.
In the class schedule: Look for a fully online class with a combination of “Live Web” and “Online”.
Part of the class meets online at set times, and part is completed on your own schedule
Partially Online (formerly known as Hybrid)
A mix of online and in-person learning.
In the class schedule: Check for any required in-person dates.
These classes are mostly online, but you may need to come to campus for certain activities.
- Some required in-person meetings, such as exams or orientations
- Online coursework and assignments
- Weekly deadlines still apply
HyFlex
Attend in person or online—it’s your choice.
In the class schedule: Look for “HyFlex.”
HyFlex classes let you choose how to attend each session. You can come to campus or join online at the same scheduled time.
