Women’s History Month Conference Event: Exploring Encarnaci—n Pinedo’s 1898 Cookbook

March 19 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm PDT

Free

Exploring Encarnaci—n Pinedo’s 1898 Cookbook. Ms. Pinedo lived in northern California from 1849 to 1902, and was a descendent of an original member of de Anza’s colonization of the area. In 1898, Pinedo published El Cocinero Espa–ol, the first cookbook published in the US by a Latina. In it she captured the Californio culture of the Rancho period. We will explore foodways revealed in her recipes, demonstrating the richness and sophistication of that culture as seen from a woman’s point-of-view.
