Rediscovering Alice Barnett Stevenson: San Diego’s Early 20th Century Composer

March 15 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm PDT

Trained in Chicago and Berlin, San Diego-based art song composer Alice Barnett Stevenson (1886-1975) dedicated herself to enriching the musical community of San Diego by advocating for local musical education and endorsing professional performance opportunities for herself and her colleagues. She supported herself and her family through her music, and built her career professionally composing, teaching, collaborating, performing, and producing concerts in San Diego, creating a vibrant classical music scene in the rapidly growing city. A co-founder of the San Diego Symphony Association, her vocal repertoire enjoyed widespread performance during her lifetime; from local schools to prestigious New York institutions, her songs were touted as “adventurous” while remaining accessible in their Impressionist-inspired style. Yet, despite her musical accolades and community outreach, over the years her music and life story have fallen into obscurity. Come learn about Alice Barnett’s community work, music, and life story!
