Fiber Arts: Women’s Art from Prehistory to the Feminist Movement

March 12 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm PDT

a crafting workshop that would provide some unstructured time for folks to relax and tap in to their creativity, while also tying in the history of arts and handicrafts in women’s history and art. The decorative arts were often dismissed as minor or inferior to more “serious” forms, but have historically been a vivid and diverse space where women could exercise their own creative freedom, steering away from cultural biases. The decorative arts, especially textile design, weaving and embroidery, allowed women to shape their femininity and actively take part in creative and social discourse. These crafts were a way to re-evaluate the mundane and resist and re-imagine stereotypes. The workshop will include small crochet, cross-stich, paint, and paper craft projects.
