Administration of Justice - Law Enforcement Courses required for an A.A. Degree Major
Law Enforcement Courses required for a Certificate of Achievement The Certificate in Law Enforcement is a series of courses which when combined satisfy mandated training requirements for California police officers. The program is P.O.S.T. (Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training) certified and prepares the student for work as a law enforcement officer. Admission to the program is by special application. To be eligible for consideration, the applicant must (1) be free of felony conviction, (2) be eligible for English 50, (3) possess a valid driver’s license, (4) pass a physical fitness examination, (5) complete a general knowledge written examination, (6) pass a medical examination, (7) be 18 years old, and (8) demonstrate psychological fitness to perform law enforcement work. In addition to passing the required college examinations the student must obtain passing scores on each of the 42 Knowledge Domain Examinations required by P.O.S.T.

COURSE OFFERINGS 65 Preparation for Law Enforcement Three hours lecture (3) This course will provide an educational overview of the hiring process of law enforcement agencies and prepare the serious candidate for law enforcement employment to successfully complete the pre-employment testing and screening process. It will take the student from the written test all the way through to the oral interview. Credit/No Credit only.
72 Academy Orientation and Leadership Three hours lecture (3) Professional orientation, academy regulation, military drill, study skills, and discipline are a part of the academy orientation. Leadership portion of course includes character and qualities of the modern day police officer; how to build on their character to become more aligned to the community's expectations of law enforcement; and developing life organizational skills.
75 Spanish for Law Enforcement Three hours lecture (3) Basic conversational Spanish with emphasis on law enforcement situations.
80 Vehicle Operations Two hours lecture (2) Students will learn how to prevent vehicle collisions; basic defensive driving principles and techniques in order to develop safe driving habits. The successful student will become proficient in the actual operation of the vehicle, and knowledgeable about the dynamic forces at work.
82 First Aid for Law Enforcement One and one-half hours lecture (1.5) An overview of emergency medical care terminology and procedures required for peace officers when responding to victims where assessment of immediate condition, appropriate first aid treatment and possible basic life support maneuvers will be required.
100 Introduction to Criminal Justice Three hours lecture (3) A comprehensive overview of the American Criminal Justice System. History, theories, and philosophy of the three parts of the criminal justice system including law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Relevant sociological and economic issues, past and present, will be addressed. CSU; UC (CAN AJ 2)
101 Criminal Evidence Three hours lecture (3) The kinds and degrees of evidence and the rules governing the admissibility of evidence in court. CSU
102 Criminal Procedures Three hours lecture (3) Review of the criminal justice system; criminal procedures from incident to final disposition; principles of constitutional, federal, and state laws as they apply to, and affect the administration of justice. CSU
103 Community Relations Three hours lecture (3) A study of the role of law enforcement and justice system participants. The expectations and interrelationships between the various agencies and the public view/role toward establishing positive relationships. An overview of communication skills and the interaction between the criminal justice system and the multicultural society will be presented. Hate crimes, as well as prejudice, bias, and discrimination will be addressed. CSU; UC
104 Criminal Law Three hours lecture (3) Historical development, philosophy, and constitutional provisions of law. Definitions, classification of crimes, study of case law, and concepts of the law as a social force. CSU; UC
105 Criminal Evidence and Procedures Three hours lecture (3) An overview of the criminal justice system; laws of arrest, rules of evidence, search and seizure, and juvenile procedures. CSU
110 Basic Criminal Investigation Three hours lecture (3) Fundamentals of investigation, search, collection and preservation of physical evidence, scientific aids, modus operandi, source of information, interviews and interrogations, and incident reporting. CSU
114 Report Writing Two hours lecture (2) Documentation of criminal and civil incidents. Basic crime and traffic reports will be addressed. Narrative reporting will be emphasized. CSU
115 Patrol Procedures Three hours lecture (3) Responsibilities, techniques, and methods of police patrol. CSU
117A Patrol Tactics 1 Three hours lecture (3) Specific types of circumstances encountered by patrol officers including disabled persons, gangs, controlled substances, missing persons, weapons laws, hazardous materials, and custody are included in this course. CSU
117B Patrol Tactics 2 Three hours lecture (3) Specific types of circumstances encountered by patrol officers including patrol methods, vehicle stops, and unusual occurrences are included in this course. CSU
117C Patrol Tactics 3 Three hours lecture (3) Specific types of circumstances encountered by patrol officers including crimes in progress, domestic violence, emotional situations, and disputes are included in this course. CSU
117D Patrol Tactics 4 One hour lecture-Two hours lecture-laboratory (2) Scenarios depicting circumstances encountered by patrol officers will be performed by students in an examination atmosphere and then debriefed by students and staff. CSU
118A Basic Firearms One hour lecture-Two hours lecture-laboratory (3) Principles of firearm safety, ballistics, and legal aspects of weapons. Fundamentals of marksmanship. Proficiency with revolver, pistol, and shotgun will be required. CSU
118B Tactical Firearms Two hours lecture-laboratory (1) Fundamentals of firearms as they pertain to law enforcement activities. Tactical usage and marksmanship will be stressed. Use of chemical agents will also be included. CSU
119A Law Enforcement Procedures Review 1 One hour lecture-laboratory (.5) Review of criminal procedures as they are applied by the police officer. CSU
119B Law Enforcement Procedures Review 2 One hour lecture-laboratory (.5) Review of criminal laws as they are applied by the police officer. CSU
119C Law Enforcement Procedures Review 3 One hour lecture-laboratory (.5) Review of enforcement procedures as applied by the police officer. CSU
119D Law Enforcement Procedures Review 4 One hour lecture-laboratory (.5) Review of investigative procedures as applied by the police officer. CSU
120 Defensive Tactics Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Protection against persons armed with dangerous weapons; demonstration and drill in a limited number of holds and come-alongs; restraint of prisoners and the mentally ill; moral obligations; and fundamental use of the baton. CSU
122 Police Fitness Three hours lecture-laboratory (1) Life-long fitness techniques involving aerobic, strength, and flexibility programs will be emphasized. CSU
131 Juvenile Justice Three hours lecture (3) The organization, functions, and jurisdiction of juvenile agencies; the processing and detention of juveniles; juvenile case disposition; juvenile statutes and court procedures. Includes youth subcultures and delinquency and the varied philosophies underlying their existence. CSU
135 Traffic Control Three hours lecture (3) Traffic law enforcement; traffic control; fundamentals of traffic accident investigation; California Vehicle Code. CSU
141 Enforcement Psychology Three hours lecture (3) Designed to assist the peace officers understanding of the psychological dilemma of law enforcement. Victimology, diversity, politics, and the tactical aspect of the criminal justice system will be evaluated from a psychological perspective. CSU
175 Narcotics Three hours lecture (3) A survey of laws and specific characteristics pertaining to hallucinogens, narcotics, marijuana, alcohol, and poisonous substances. It is designed to give the student conceptual insight into contemporary problems of vice, drugs, and legal social issues related to dangerous drugs. CSU
180 Criminology Three hours lecture (3) A general study of crime, the science of crime and criminal behavior, the forms of criminal behavior and the causes of crime. Crime theories and sociological causes of crime, types of crime, and issues of criminal behavior will also be addressed. CSU
197 Topics in Administration of Justice Units awarded in topics courses are dependent upon the number of hours required of the student. Any combination of lecture, laboratory, or lecture-laboratory may be scheduled by the department. Refer to Class Schedule. (.5-6) Topics in Administration of Justice. 296 Special Projects Three, six, or nine hours laboratory (1,2,3) An opportunity for a student who has demonstrated an interest and understanding of criminal justice to work beyond existing classes or desires to pursue a project which does not fit into the context of existing classes. Students will work directly with an instructor. May be taken four times. CSU
