In this cheesy and epic adventure into the world of Dungeons & Dragons, She Kills Monsters follows Agnes Evans, an English teacher in Athens, Ohio, in the year 1995. After losing her parents and younger sister Tilly in a car crash, she delves into Tilly’s dungeons and dragons campaign to uncover the truth about Tilly’s secret life. What begins as a simple quest to understand her sister’s hidden world soon escalates into a wild, action-packed journey, where Agnes faces off against homicidal fairies, menacing creatures, and the mother of dragons, Tiamat. As Agnes immerses herself in the fantastical realm Tilly created, she not only battles fantastical monsters but also confronts her fears, grief, and long-held misconceptions about her sister.

CONCERT HOUR - Zo Shah and Gunnar Biggs

Gunnar Biggs has been a prominent figure in the musical environment in Southern California for over forty years. Gunnar is a known quantity in the region, maintaining a solid groove and studied understanding of the role of the bass across genres including Classical, Latin jazz/salsa, big band, Brazilian, straight ahead, blues and fusion jazz. Zo Shah is a Pakistani American musician born in London, and residing in Southern California. As a jazz guitarist, Zo is one of the prominent members of the San Diego jazz scene. From jazz to fusion, funk, blues, pop, rock, he has played with many treasured artists in Southern California. As a teacher, he has taught hundreds of students from all ages.

Bred and buttered in Brooklyn, irresistible vocal force, Mara Kaye is the girl JAZZ LIVES calls “one of New York’s great gifts to the world.” She’s got “a voice that sounds like Louis Armstrong’s trumpet at a rent party” [Jimmy Vivino] and a sharp comedic
savoir faire that’s reminiscent of some of the early comediennes of the stage and screen. Kaye has carved her own unique path through the New York Jazz Scene performing at iconic venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Joe’s Pub at The
Public Theater and even all the way out to Moscow Russia, singing a studied presentation of early classic blues and jazz highlighting the legacies of pioneer blues women like Billie Holiday, Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith and Ma Rainey. Early on in her career she toured the US with the YERBA BUENA STOMPERS, a true traditional jazz band of seasoned jazz veterans, led by her mentor, expert banjo/ guitarist JOHN GILL. Members of the band have played with the legendary Turk
Murphy, Leon Redbone — even backing up Louis Armstrong himself.

A “gifted and versatile pianist” (San Francisco Chronicle) and GRAMMY® Award winner Nadia Shpachenko enjoys bringing into the world things that are outside the box—powerful pieces that often possess unusual sonic qualities or instrumentation. Nadia Shpachenko holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. Her principal teachers included John Perry, Victor Rosenbaum, and Victor Derevianko. Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, she is a Steinway Artist, Schoenhut Toy Piano Artist, and professor of music at Cal Poly Pomona University.

Concert Hour - Alina Steele and Phillip Matsuura
October 24th at 1pm in Performance Lab D-10

Alina Steele is a devoted educator and spends much of her time teaching flute. Teaching and supporting her private flute students to reach their performance goals, her flute students are some of California’s finest young musicians winning top level competitions such as MTAC VOCE competitions, SDFG Youth Artist Competitions, and earning top spots in local youth orchestras such as San Diego Youth Symphony, Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra, and All-State ensembles. Professor Steele is a part-time music faculty at Palomar College, where she teaches flute and performs with the Palomar Symphony.

Phillip Matsuura enjoys an active and varied career as a keyboardist in many mediums. Highly sought-after as a collaborator, chamber musician and ballet pianist, his recital partners have included principals of Jacksonville and Kansas City symphonies, and his private vocal clients have included singers affiliated with The Metropolitan Opera, The Royal Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Bayerische Staatsoper, Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Wiener Kammeroper.
