Palomar Performing Arts presents Bad Hombres, Good Wives: A Twist on Molière’s Timeless Comedy
Palomar Performing Arts is set to present Bad Hombres, Good Wives, a high-energy, darkly comedic adaptation of Molière’s classic School for Wives, reimagined by Herbert Siguenza, the co-founder of Culture Clash. This thrilling narco-novela, set in Sinaloa, Mexico in 1992, combines the outrageous world of narco families with the sharp wit and farcical humor of Molière, delivering a wild and captivating ride that’s packed with love, betrayal, and unexpected twists. The production runs May 2 – 11, 2025, with performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Studio Theatre at Palomar College.
In Bad Hombres, Good Wives, Don Ernesto is a powerful Narco kingpin who has arranged for a young girl named Eva to be trained by nuns to become his loyal, subservient wife. He sends his sassy housekeeper, Armida, to retrieve Eva by train, but when Eva and Armida meet Mario Grande Jr., the handsome son of Don Ernesto’s rival, sparks fly. Eva and Mario’s love-at-first-sight encounter sets the stage for a high-stakes romance that mirrors Romeo and Juliet, while tensions escalate between two powerful narco families.
This adaptation borrows from classic works like Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and The Importance of Being Earnest, creating a fast-paced comedy that mixes farce with modern-day drama. Amid the chaos, the story culminates in a surprising double wedding and a truce between the warring narco families, blending elements of romance, family loyalty, and hilarious misunderstandings.
“The cast is having so much fun working on this play that I already know how infectious the pleasure will be for the audience,” said director Michael Mufson. “The show features some great banda songs, cumbia dancing and hilarious stage combat. It’s got that magical combination of precision and spontaneity that makes the comedy soar.”
Bad Hombres, Good Wives is an exciting mix of humor, action, and cultural satire that pushes the boundaries of classic theater while offering a fresh and contemporary perspective on themes of love, power, and loyalty. With its dynamic characters and sharp dialogue, this production promises to be an unforgettable experience for audiences.
