Is the EU overreacting?

I think it’s wise to get the vaccine. Following the appearance of the delta variant of Covid-19, places like the EU have begun to restrict their borders once again, with Americans as a pivotal reason for their decision.

According to the EU, they are banning any travel that is classified under non essential due to the recent flooding of COVID cases around the world, and especially in the U.S., who don’t meet the 75 cases for every 100,000 people requirement. Not only that, but America currently stands at 300 cases for every 100,000 people which is far and beyond that threshold.

While only 3 in every 1000 people get COVID currently, when you consider the average amount of Americans flying in just the summertime alone being 250 million passengers, the potential amount of people with COVID goes up to about 750,000. Despite obviously not everyone going to a country in the EU, the risk is a lot more severe when all they can go on are these similar statistics that say that, in general, we are a threat to the health of European citizens.

So when considering the potential damage we could do internationally, I think it’s best to work on ourselves and the people within our own country so we can appreciate the privilege we have of visiting other nations. Respect for the country you wish to go to is the most important part and for the people that absolutely need to go, just give them a negative test result.
