Women’s swim team small, but mighty

Palomar’s women’s swim competed in the Golden West Invitational on Feb. 21.

The Comets had a solid meet, considering they only had five athletes compared to the 28 and 22 swimmers of the top two teams. They took third place overall out of the 10 schools competing, with a point total of 158.

Harley Young had the highest points for the Comets by scoring 31 points on two second place finishes and a fourth place finish. These came in the 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard butterfly, and in the 500-yard freestyle.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Young beat 22 swimmers with a time of 1:07.09, and outswam 22 swimmers in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 29.64. She also took down 16 swimmers in the longest individual event, the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 5:47.67.

Sherridan Nelson brought home the only win for the Comets in the 100-yard individual medley, out swimming 18 swimmers with a time of 1:11.84.

She also competed in the 50-yard breaststroke, where she placed 11th out of 20 swimmers and 13th out of 24 swimmers in the 50-yard butterfly.

Sydni Dickson was the second highest point winner for Palomar by scoring 26 points with two fourth places finishes and a fifth place finish.

Dickson’s placings came in the 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard butterfly, and in the 100-yard butterfly. In the 50-yard backstroke, she outswam 19 swimmers with a time of 34.20.

In addition, she also beat 20 swimmers in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 30.45, and took down another 19 swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly with time of 1:08.98.

Another high scorer for the Comet ladies was Lea Narte. She scored 21 total points for the Comets, bringing home second place in the 50-yard backstroke, out swimming 21 competitors with a time of 32.55.

She also competed in the 100-yard backstroke, where she took fifth with a time of 1:08.89. In the 50-yard freestyle, she placed ninth with a time of 28.09.

Haley Balch had a solid finish in the 100-yard individual medley, placing third out of 19 swimmers with a time of 1:12.02 and beating her seed time by four seconds. She also placed 12th in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 32.06.

Palomar women’s swim will next be competing in the Riverside Invitational on March 13.
