KKSM Song of the Day: “Little Dreamer” by Van Halen

The KKSM Song of the Day (as chosen by King Braxton) is “Little Dreamer” by Van Halen!

The song is from the band’s 1978 debut album, Van Halen 1. Van Halen and all their albums are available on essentially every major streaming platform and music/media site!

Released in 1978, Van Halen 1 introduced the world to what would later on be known as one of the highest selling rock bands in US history. The band was formed in 1972 in Pasadena, California and for 11 years featured the classic lineup of David Lee Roth on vocals, Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Michael Anthony on bass and Eddie’s brother Alex Van Halen on drums.

It was songs like “Little Dreamer that helped eventually propel Van Halen 1 to a RIAA Diamond certification which means the album sold 10 million albums! Many artist strive to go Platinum with their debut albums (meaning 1 million units sold) but Van Halen did that 10 times over!

“Little Dreamer” stands out on the album because it was the only ballad in a tracklist featuring hard rock jams such as “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Atomic Punk,” and a cover of “You Really Got Me,” by The Kinks. I chose Little Dreamer because not only is Van Halen my favorite band, but this song has always been my favorite song by them. The song is about a kid who has big plans in life even though people don’t believe in them. The relatable subject matter along with the combination of Roth’s blues inspired vocal style and Eddie Van Halen’s unique guitar playing style, definitely makes the song enjoyable my many!
