High Tech = Higher Pay, Career Event For Women, Open to the Public

American Association of University Women – San Diego Branch will be holding a panel of “High-Performing” Women on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SDSU CAREER CENTER (Student Services East 1200), 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182. The event, “High Tech = Higher Pay For Women: Your Career Path,” will offer valuable insight and guidance to women seeking entry into the workforce as well as those seeking career growth. The emphasis will be on attracting and retaining women in STEM career paths. Men are invited to attend, and men have also found previous panels to be worthwhile. AAUW is excited about technology as a means to reach one’s career potential through competitive skill-building, since all career paths now require computer and other technical skills. High-tech skills will increase in demand in the 21st Century.
Attendees will hear from a panel of “High-Performing” Women who will share their career paths. “Inspiring role models in technical careers are important because the US Dept. of Labor reports that the wide range of high tech industries pay considerably more than other industries, but women are notably missing from this career sector,” observes Lillian Payn, Academic Technology Coordinator at Palomar College and event coordinator. For example, only one in ten computer science grads and 13% of software engineers are women.
The panelists will identify the high tech trends in San Diego as well as local science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) educational opportunities. Representatives from SDSU, Palomar College, and the San Diego Workforce Partnership will also present educational and career opportunities in San Diego. There will be a Pre-Event Tour of the NEW Women’s Resource Center from 4:30 to 5:00 PM.

Each attendee will receive a free Executive Summary: Why So Few? Women in STEM. Refreshments will be served.

High Tech = Higher Pay is free and open to the public. Please register at https://goo.gl/Qlq7HP. For more information about the High Tech = Higher Pay Careers for Women event, please call Prof. Lillian Payn at 760/744-1150 ext. 3078 or e-mail: LPayn@Palomar.edu.
