English Department Writing Center tutors are available for one-on-one sessions either by appointment (recommended) or on a walk-in basis (based on tutor availability).
Students can also come to the Writing Center to work on assignments independently or in small groups. We have fifteen computer stations, electrical outlets at all tables, comfortable chairs, and a Go Print station. In order to print out documents, you must have money in your student account; you can add money to your account using one of the machines in the Library or Admissions (you will need your ID number, eServices password, and paper money – no coins or credit/debit cards). The cost of printing is 10 cents per page.
English Department Writing tutors are also available at the Teaching Learning Center (TLC) in Escondido. No appointments are necessary to see a Writing tutor in Escondido.
In both locations, you must be a registered student of Palomar College and sign in using your Palomar ID number in order to receive tutoring or work independently at an open computer station.
Make an Appointment with a tutor
You may schedule an appointment in person at the front desk of the Writing Center (in H-102) or by calling 760-744-1150 ext. 2778 during open hours. Please use your real, complete name when making an appointment or signing in at the Writing Center.
Appointments are approximately 25 minutes. You may pre-schedule ONE session per day. If you desire additional time with a tutor AFTER you have had one session, you may put your name on the wait-list for a second appointment. IF a tutor is available you will be assigned a second session. There is a limit of two sessions per day with a tutor.
Because tutoring sessions are short, and tutor availability is limited, it is important that you arrive on time for your appointment. If you are not here at the scheduled start time of your appointment, that spot will be made available for another student. If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, please call or stop by to cancel so that appointment time is available for another student.
Make the Most of Your Tutoring Session
Bring everything you need:
Your assignment sheet, notes, handouts, and any feedback received from your instructor
A copy of your draft
Your textbook(s)
Your study notes
Specific questions
Any research cited in your work
Your Palomar ID number
Money in your Go Print account
Bring a writer’s attitude: all writers, even professionals, know the value of interactive feedback during the writing process.
Don’t wait until the last minute to work with a tutor; tutors can help with all phases of the writing process, from reading a prompt to generating essay topics, developing and focusing ideas, organizing and structuring an essay, documenting research, and polishing your final draft.
Understand that tutors will not write or edit any portion of your assignment for you; rather, they will work with you to improve your skill in developing and editing your own sentences and ideas.
