Palomar comes from behind to defeat Fullerton

The Palomar baseball team won its game on Feb. 6 against the Fullerton College Hornets. The Comets rallied in the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and win 7-5.

Taylor Turski started the game for the Comets. Turski was off to a hot start as he sat down the Hornets in order with a strikeout in the first inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Comet shortstop Dylan Breault reached on an error and advanced to second. He scored later in the inning on Shane Olson’s RBI infield single.

The Hornets scored two unearned runs off Turski in the second inning, as a two-out error allowed one runner to score and a single scored the other later that inning.

Turski ended up leaving the game in the third inning with what was described as “a little tightness in his tricep.”

Head coach Buck Taylor said, “A win is never worth anyone getting hurt.”

Brett Lockwood came into the game to relieve the Comet pitcher.

Turski pitched two and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts while allowing two hits and two unearned runs.

Palomar bounced back to tie the game in the third inning at two, as Casey Henderson’s RBI groundout scored Chase Grant.

The Hornets scored one run in the fourth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning to make the score 5-2.

The Comets only had two hits through the first six innings but they broke out in the seventh inning. The Comets scored three runs on four hits to make the score 5-5. Efrain Medina, Henderson, and Olson each had an RBI base hit in the inning.

The Comets took the lead in the eighth inning as a run scored on a Hornet error. Chase Grant added an insurance run as he tripled a run home to put the Comets up 7-5.

Mitchell Hayes came in to pitch the ninth inning and got two quick outs before allowing two straight singles. He retired the final batter on a ground out to pick up the save.

Coach Buck Taylor said he would “rather have one of those games [comeback win] than win 10-nothing.” He added that his players “showed a little life today, or more life than we’ve shown in the past, so yeah, it was a good day.”
