Live show gives students real-life broadcast experience

Palomar College has its own morning television show.

Sept. 24 was the start of the second season of a show called “Palomar Live.” This program is part of the Digital Broadcast Arts program under class DBA 220. “Palomar Live” is a student produced, directed, hosted and run weekly morning show that is broadcast live.

Students get to try out different aspects of broadcasting whether in the control room creating graphics, hosting, directing, producing, operating cameras, audio, or switching cameras.

“You do everything live and you can get your hands on all the equipment, so you actually know how to use it,” said Student Stephanie Bratland, the director of the first show.

“Palomar Live” is broadcast on campus from the PCTV studio located in P33. The studio has been redesigned with new vertical projection screens and walls specific to the daytime program to set it apart from the evening news broadcast, “North County News.” The studio also has a green screen and a professionally equipped control room.

“[Viewers] definitely should tune in to the show because these are all students working. And everyone is professional,” Student Keith Russell said.

The hosts for the first program are, Student Emmy Award Nominated, Anissa Ocansey and Peter Kowalchuk.

“Palomar Live” focuses on topics that student producers believe other students and the local community will find interest and value in.

Caitlin Reed, a Palomar student who is producing the first broadcast said, “It’s relevant to Palomar and it’s relevant to this area.”

The broadcast has featured segments on the San Diego Film Festival, San Diego Restaurant Week, the new construction on campus, Flamenco dancers, Vikings and music.

“It’s a fun, nice morning show that’s more current, more local than other morning shows,” Reed said. “We’re trying to find unique, uplifting, and positive stories to bring to this morning show type of atmosphere. It’s a lot different from [‘North County News’]. NCN is more of a traditional news setting. This is more like ‘Good Morning America’, or ‘The Today Show.'”

“Palomar Live” airs every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. on Cox Cable and Time Warner Cable on channel 16, and on AT&T U-verse on Channel 99 or on PCTV Live Stream. Viewers can also see episodes shortly after they have aired on Vimeo.

Palomar Student Stephanie Bratland said, “It will be an experience to watch.”
