Many students may not realize that upon enrollment at Palomar College a fee was paid for health insurance. That fee, per semester, is only $19. This is a state-mandated fee for all students, full and part-time, plus it comes with many benefits.

Jayne Conway, the director of Health Services, said that on any given day there are 50 to 80 students seen in the centers on the Palomar San Marcos and Escondido campus.

Most services are at no extra charge, but if there is an added fee for services it’s minimal. Visits to see the nurse, the nurse practitioner or the doctor are at no charge to the students as are many of the services offered.

There are free health screenings (a screening that is usually done when there is no sign of illness) which includes hearing and vision tests.

Also, health screenings for men and women that include tests specific to your gender, such as prostate checks or pap smears, and free admissions physicals for programs such as nursing or dental technician. Flu season is upon us and currently students can get a free flu shot.

There are free medical supplies such as band-aids, Tylenol or ibuprofen, antacids, ice packs, condoms and feminine products.

The Health Center uses many resources for specific needs. There is a smoking cessation program, overseen by Dr. Hubert Mast, which uses nicotine gum, nicotine patches or, in some cases, a medication called Chantix. These are at a minimal cost to the student; and any qualified student can sign up for this program at any time.

Periodically the Health Center will use a specific day and dedicate several hours to concentrating on an agenda to bring awareness and further education to the students.

You will often see them on the patio at the Student Union supporting agendas such as confidential HIV testing, breast cancer awareness, Great American Smoke-Out, blood drives, domestic violence awareness, suicide prevention, World Aids Day, sexual responsibility and so many more.

The Health Center has an abundance of services, supplies and a wealth of information. The staff members are well educated, confident and resourceful. Their goals are to promote the health and success of students while attending college.

Health Services can be reached at (760) 744-1150 ext. 2380 or call ext. 8105 to make an appointment on campus.
