{"id":11488,"date":"2026-10-05T16:30:02","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T23:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/pridecenter\/?page_id=11488"},"modified":"2026-10-05T16:49:19","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T23:49:19","slug":"coming-out-promising-practices","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/pridecenter\/index\/resources\/coming-out-promising-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"Promising Practices to Support Coming Out Journeys\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever your role at Palomar College, review these practices that you can incorporate into your job to support students, staff, and faculty as they navigate Coming Out on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Promising Practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-context=\"{ &quot;autoclose&quot;: false, &quot;accordionItems&quot;: [] }\" data-wp-interactive=\"core\/accordion\" role=\"group\" class=\"wp-block-accordion is-layout-flow wp-block-accordion-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>When in the Classroom and in Meetings:<\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have been honored with someone\u2019s disclosure of identity, do not expect them to be ready to share that lived experience with others, even if it is relevant to the discussion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We encourage instructors, leaders, and facilitators to include Pronouns in their Group Introductions! Model it, confidently!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s do a round of introductions with our names, pronouns, and how you\u2019re feeling. I\u2019ll start. My name is Professor Dee, my pronouns are he\/him, and I\u2019m excited to be here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When folks opt not to share pronouns, it may be because they are not yet ready to share that with others. Avoid calling out folks who choose not to share that at the time and continue modeling to promote an inclusive campus community.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If someone\u2019s pronouns are different than you expected or have changed over time, avoid drawing public attention to this new information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>When Cross-Checking Rosters, Canvas, and Other Name Systems:<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you notice a difference in names for a student in a Palomar system (e.g. Canvas vs. SARS), do not guess. Ask an open-ended question!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I see a couple of different first names on file and want to make sure I know which one you go by. Let me know how you&#8217;d like me to address you in class.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>When Scheduling Appointments with Students:&nbsp;<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students may not yet be ready to update their name in the Palomar system, but it can help to give them the option or to check if there&#8217;s a name they&#8217;d like to be referred to in the Counseling Process.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I see a first name listed here, and want to double check. Is there a nickname or another name you go by so I can let the Counselor know?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to check with <em>every<\/em> student, not just students you suspect use a different name.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>When Onboarding New Palomar Employees:<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communicate early with new employees about what name they would like their display name (Outlook, Teams, etc.) to reflect and advocate to ensure this is reflected in new user creation.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>As a Supervisor:<\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continually work with leaders and supervisees to review forms, processes, and systems that may contribute to unintentional \u201couting\u201d or deadnaming*.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Assign SafeZone training through the Palomar Pride Center to foster a more welcoming, inclusive, and brave space that lets faculty, staff, and students know that they are celebrated in their identity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*Deadnaming is a form of misgendering, being the act of calling or referring to a transgender or non-binary person by a former name which they have rejected (considered to be <em>dead<\/em> to them).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Other Promising Practices:<\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When someone has chosen to confide a new name, a set of pronouns, or other information with you, honor someone\u2019s choice to share themselves with you by practicing so that you can confidently address that person in every interaction moving forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continually check in about what context a person uses that name and pronouns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m checking your Emergency Contact info for the field trip.
