{"id":5307,"date":"2021-06-08T15:18:13","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T22:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/policeacademy\/?page_id=5307"},"modified":"2021-06-08T15:40:29","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T22:40:29","slug":"diversity-equity-and-inclusion-work-at-palomar-college-police-academy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/policeacademy\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-work-at-palomar-college-police-academy\/","title":{"rendered":"Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify\">Palomar College Police Academy is committed to upholding the Palomar College action plan to support our diverse racial communities and to further Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the District.\u00a0 \u00a0We\u00a0 will work diligently to further racial equity in police reform to support and enhance the culture of Antiracism at Palomar.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: inherit\">We welcome and encourage students from diverse backgrounds to join the police academy to become public servants within the communities they represent.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit\">Here are actions the Palomar College Police Academy have taken as a partner in the diversity, equity, and inclusion work being conducted across the Palomar College campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The Academy developed and introduced more verbal communication skills into its curriculum that go far beyond the mandates of our state accrediting agency (POST).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Including overview and response to cultural diversity, anti-racism &amp; anti-discrimination<\/li>\n<li>Providing the student with a more in-depth examination of Socio-economic groups<\/li>\n<li>Implementing specific training in responding to and employing de-escalation tactics<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Academy established and implemented first of its kind community forum within the academy program. This forum gathered community members together, including representation from LGBTQ, minority leaders, educators, local business owners, and local law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy is currently in design and implementation of a enhanced recruitment effort specific to women and minorities. We are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li>Building strong partnerships with our communities through outreach<\/li>\n<li>Educating those interested in law enforcement to what the job entails (pros v. cons)<\/li>\n<li>Employing social media, community forums higher education institutions, and local outreach programs for suggestions and recommendations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The\u00a0Academy is developing a mentorship program to assist disadvantaged students in education and physical training.
