Here is all the info you will need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For activities\/events\/workshops\/trainings to qualify for PD they must pass the following criteria outlined in Title 5 and guidelines established from the Chancellor&#8217;s Office:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Does the activity contribute to student, staff, and\/or instructional improvement?<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit\"><strong>Student improvement<\/strong>\u2013 teaches you to assist students with larger, non-instructional issues; e.g. making better-informed life choices, becoming more meaningful contributors to society, becoming better informed citizens, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit\"><strong> Staff improvement<\/strong> \u2013 develops your non-instructional workplace skills <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit\"><strong> Instructional improvement<\/strong> \u2013develops your instructional skills, methods, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Does the activity align with Title 5?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe activities which college personnel will be engaged in during their designated staff, student and instructional improvement days. Activities for college personnel may also include, but need not be limited to, the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>course instruction and evaluation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>staff development, in-service training and instructional improvement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>program and course curriculum or learning resource development and evaluation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>student personnel services;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning resource services;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>related activities, such as student advising, guidance, orientation, matriculation services, and student, faculty, and staff diversity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>departmental or division meetings, conferences and workshops, and institutional research;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other duties as assigned by the district;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the necessary supporting activities for the above;\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Are you being paid for the activity? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective with the 2011-2012 academic year, the California Community Colleges Chancellor\u2019s Office has stated that there can be no \u201cdouble-dipping\u201d for professional development.\u00a0 Any paid work is not eligible for PD hours.\u00a0 You cannot accept additional compensation of any kind for something you are already paid to do (stipends, honoraria, gifts, advancement on salary scale, deferred compensation, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-right:0;margin-left:0\"><em>PD eligible activities does not include any part of your <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">classroom\/teaching preparation<\/span> since that is compensated as part of your teaching load<\/em>. For example, routine preparation and\/or updating of classroom structures, schedules, readings, handouts, PowerPoint slides, presentations, lectures (including video) and syllabi does not count as professional development. Likewise, mentoring students during office hours is a routine activity and does not qualify as professional development. Making travel arrangements for a field trip that is part of course requirements or setting up for events are not professional development activities (just some examples). Note there are some Curricula or Review Articulation of Courses and Mentor and\/or Advise Students\u00a0and other categories that do count as PD, read more on what does qualify in the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1a0XuHqVWDdNboaWan0hvV-FTxUL6B_f4uubdMOxloSw\/edit\">External Training \u2022\u00a0Self-Designed PD Activities<\/a> guide featured on this page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Will the taxpayers approve?<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We are public employees \u2013 If the taxpayers find out their tax dollars paid you for this activity instead of classroom instruction, will they approve?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Subject to review \/ audit \u2013As public records, PD transcripts are subject to review and\/or audit by anyone at any time until the third July 1st beyond the activity\u2019s completion date (Class 3 Disposable Records per Title 5).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover your bases \u2013Try to make sure your activities and supporting documentation leave no room for questions. In the event of a review or audit you may be asked to provide reasonable justification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the guidelines above all workshops and events in the P<sup>3<\/sup>D portal are already preapproved and vetted to fit into one of the aforementioned categories.&nbsp;&nbsp;Are you looking for some more flexibility for your Professional Development?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-size: 20pt\">There is also a plethora of Self-Designed External Training!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would rather learn on your own time, you can choose from numerous self-designed PD opportunities.&nbsp; In our&nbsp; P<sup>3<\/sup>D portal,&nbsp; self-designed training is termed <strong><em>External Training<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp; To add&nbsp;<strong><em>External Training<\/em><\/strong> to your <em><strong>Learning Transcript<\/strong> <\/em>you have to go to the<em><strong> P<sup>3<\/sup>D Portal<\/strong><\/em> and go to <em><strong>My Transcript<\/strong><\/em>, then choose <em><strong>Options<\/strong> <\/em>and select <strong><em>Add&nbsp;External Training.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; You will then be able to add the details of the self-designed external training and select the appropriate self-designed professional learning category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Important Note: \u00a0You cannot mark an External Training complete until the end date you entered has past! \u00a0Faculty- Be sure the end date for your External Training is at least a couple days before the PD deadline so you have time to mark it as complete.
