Trumpus Caesar Returns Staged Reading
November 3 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm PST
Palomar Performing Arts presents a staged reading of Trumpus Caesar Returns, just in time for the election.
San Marcos, CA — Palomar Performing Arts is excited to contribute to the election discourse with a staged reading of Trumpus Ceasar Returns, a play with music and comedic adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Ceasar by Carlos Morton set during the current 2024 political race; directed by Michael Mufson.
The performance will take place in on Nov. 3, 2024 at 3 P.M. Admission is free.
Performance Location has changed to the Howard Brubeck Theatre
Mufson and Morton have been working on this adaptation since the Spring of 2024. According to Mufson, “Our original impulse for this sequel to Carlos’s 2020 cyber play, Trumpus Caesar, was to riff on the horror motif of the monster who returns after we think it’s been defeated. But we felt that analogy was too close to the reality of our traumatized nation, and so we set out to approach it with a more accessible, comic flair.”
According to playwright, Carlos Morton, the setting is “Ancient Rome” with a bit of “Saturday Night Live” where the political reality is analyzed through a comedic lens. Kamala Harris appears as Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Wisdom and Justice, while Donald Trump takes on the persona of an “Orange Jupiter” who aspires to rule heaven and earth. The cosmic struggle on Mt. Olympus is reflected by political strife on planet earth involving a mysterious undocumented alien named “Hey-Zeus,” a minor-God named Pluto, and scores of cartoon characters from all sides of the political aisle including Vlad Putus, Ayatollah Abbott and the Texas Taliban, Cassius Bidenus, Liz Chain-us, and a surprise appearance by Gini Thomas and the Supremes.
Trumpus Caesar Returns is a sequel to Trumpus Ceasar (2020) that Morton wrote and produced online during the Covid lockdown in the run-up to the 2020 election.
Parking is free in lots 1 & 15 for this performance. Howard Brubeck Theatre is located at Palomar College, 1140 W. Mission Road in San Marcos, CA 92069.
