The new 13th Edition of Essentials of Oceanography (Trujillo and Thurman, Pearson Education © 2020) is expected to be published in February 2019 and will be available in print, eText, and digital reader versions. The book features many improvements, including (1) a new boxed “Process of Science” feature in most chapters emphasizing the scientific process by highlighting an area of oceanographic inquiry and explicitly pointing out how the process of science was used in that particular case; (2) a new “Exploring Data” feature, which directs students to engage with data and check their understanding by asking data interpretation questions related to data-rich figures, graphs, tables, and maps; and (3) a new “Creature Feature” that showcases a marine organism that is relevant to each chapter’s content. There is also an entire new section in Chapter 5 (Section 5.8) entitled “What Factors Control the Distribution of Carbon and Oxygen in the Ocean?”, including two new figures; new information including a new chapter-opening photo about a 2017 world’s record that was set by Brazilian big wave surfer Rodrigo Koxa, who rode a 24-meter (80-foot) breaking wave at Praia do Norte beach near Nazaré, Portugal (Chapter 8); updated information about the status of pollution in the world’s ocean (Chapter 11); updated information about coral bleaching events, including the damage caused by the severe multi-year worldwide coral bleaching event during 2014–2017 (Chapter 15); and updated data about how climate change is affecting the oceans, including several potential solutions (Chapter 16). There are also many improvements in the illustration package, including annotations on key figures and other improvements (over half of all figures have been revised). And, the overall structure of the book continues to present material in easily-digestible chunks, along with Concept Checks at the end of each section. There are also over 100 SmartFigures/SmartTables (about a dozen new for this edition), which are short instructional videos by an oceanography teaching expert that explain the most important points of key figures and tables. In addition, a vast array of Web-based student resources and self-testing modules are included in an updated and improved Mastering Oceanography (opens in new window).

For more details about the 13th edition, including specific chapter-by-chapter changes, see What’s New in the 13th Edition? (opens in new window).
