Anth 107 Language and Culture (C-ID 130, 3 units)

An introduction to linguistic anthropology, the study of language, culture and society from an anthropological perspective. Topics include the biology of language, anthropological theories of language origin, language structure, the relationship between language and culture, language variation, and nonverbal communication.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1.  Understand and apply the holistic nature of anthropology and the concept of cultural relativism to communication and language.
  2. Have a broad understanding of the various areas of language study that include but are not limited to the biological basis of language, descriptive linguistics, historical linguistics, cognitive linguistics, language variation, and language change.
  3. Analyze and demonstrate how language and culture are interrelated by examining factors such as ethnicity, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, different abilities, age, and class.
