Completing an internship (PPH Pathmaker) or volunteering in a local hospital is also a good way to gain insight and experience into the health care field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>As a prospective student, what should I do first?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\">Attend an Information Meeting conducted by the nursing department.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\">Obtain a Palomar ID number by applying to the school at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/\">www.palomar.edu\u00a0 <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\">Book Math and English assessment tests through the Assessment Office at (760) 744-1140 ext. 2383<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\">Schedule an appointment with a Palomar College counselor at (760) 744-1150 ext. 2179<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Can I apply to the nursing program and then complete my prerequisites?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"> No. The core science classes (anatomy, physiology, and microbiology), the math prerequisite (intermediate algebra), and the TEAS V exam must all be completed prior to applying to the program.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>How long will the program take?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"> The program for generic students is four consecutive semesters (two years) excluding the summer semester. The step-up LVN-RN program requires a two semester or one year commitment to complete.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>What is the difference between an Associate&#8217;s degree versus a Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Nursing?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"> Both degrees sit for the same NCLEX-RN exam to obtain their registered nursing licenses. The BSN nurse would more likely have a management position and higher compensation whereas ADN nurses are traditionally bedside nurses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>If you have been convicted of a felony can you become a registered nurse?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;font-size: 12pt\"> It depends.
