Lucy Gates, a Palomar College alum, earns \u201cCoach of the Year\u201d title in her first season acting as Head Coach.<\/p>\n
SAN MARCOS \u2014 The women\u2019s water polo team at Palomar College finished a season of undefeated conference play as the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) champions in November, as Lucy Gates was named PCAC Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n
Gates, who is originally from Oceanside, played water polo at Palomar College from 2014-16, and returned as the team\u2019s assistant coach in 2018. She stepped in as the acting Head Coach this season with Mandy Simon\u2014the PCAC Coach of the Year in 2019\u2014out on maternity leave.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was our third year in a row winning conference, so it was a big deal to carry on our streak. We just rode the momentum throughout the season and tried to get better every game,\u201d said Gates. \u201cWe had an amazing captain on the team, Elena Pena, who provided the team with a lot of positivity, guidance and encouragement, and was a big part of our success this season.\u201d<\/p>\n
The season\u2019s climactic match came on Saturday, November 5 against Mesa College.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had our eyes set on the conference championship game at the end of the season, and Mesa was our biggest competitor,\u201d Gates explained. \u201cWe only beat them by one point in overtime in the regular season, and we weren\u2019t going to see them again until the conference championships, and we ended up beating them again by one point.\u201d<\/p>\n
The team advanced to the regional tournament as underdogs and lost against Golden West College.<\/p>\n
In addition to coaching at Palomar, Gates is also the Head Women\u2019s Water Polo Coach at Oceanside High School\u2014that\u2019s two alma mater teams she is coaching at the same time, a rare achievement for a 26-year-old athlete.<\/p>\n
Gates finished her own water polo career at California State University, Monterey Bay, where she led the team in her senior year both in statistics and as team captain.<\/p>\n
She earned her master\u2019s degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University in 2019 and teaches part-time at Palomar College.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
